Artist's Statement
An ongoing search for how spirit can be made visible drives my work. My backgrounds in theatre and psychology as well as the inspiration of mythology and music have influenced both my creativity and my desire to understand creativity.
I am captivated and influenced by the art of children (before they have been "taught"), the art of indigenous and prehistoric cultures as well as the art of those who have never been taught (naive artists-outsider art). I am especially influenced by the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi – "the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature..." For example, a field of mud cracking as it dries slowly in the sun is a marvel to me.
A strong background in art history has exposed me to many artists who have influenced my work, including the Impressionists (e.g., Van Gogh, Cezanne), Der Blaue Reiter Expressionists (e.g., Gabriel Munter, Paul Klee) and the father of abstract art, Wassily Kandinsky. These artists and the many others who have also influenced my work all have one thing in common – their work is as fresh today as it was when they painted it. They all have captured that much elusive spirit – a vitality that transcends time.
My own work continues to evolve, growing more and more abstract. Through mark-making and through immersing myself in color and the endless possibilities of color juxtaposition, I endeavor to capture on paper the life force/spirit embodied in the animate and inanimate.
